In the either/or world of political dialogue that so often affects (and infects) policy discussions, some people often confuse libertarians with Republicans … or libertarians with conservatives. While their interests and philosophies may intersect, they are different in many ways.
Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson appeared on the Fox Business Network last night (Dec. 9) and his discussion with David Asman brings these distinctions into sharp relief.
In particular, Asman presses Johnson on the recent defeat of marijuana legalization in California (an issue that divides social conservatives from most libertarians) and Johnson defends his support of abortion rights while adding that he thinks Roe v. Wade is bad law — a position that would alienate both anti-abortion activists as well as abortion rights supporters. It’s not a complicated concept at all, but for some, it passes for nuance.
